Sports betting regulation: evangelical bench wants to stop project in the Chamber

The Chamber of Deputies must consider the report by deputy Adolfo Viana (PSDB-BA) which provides for the regulation of sports betting in Brazil.

The project establishes the taxation of players in the sector, in addition to creating mechanisms for monitoring and combating irregularities. However, the evangelical bench must try to obstruct the progress of the project in the House plenary.

“We will use all legislative resources at our disposal to prevent the project from moving forward,” deputy Silas Câmara (Republicanos-AM), president of the group, told the Jovem Pan website.

According to Jovem Pan, the deputy Câmara assures that the proposal does not offer any advantage to the population. The group’s parliamentarians are against any project that envisages allowing gambling in Brazil.

Silas Câmara stated that the bench was unable to meet with Viana, however, a meeting could take place on Tuesday, 12th.

According to the parliamentarian, the group is willing to talk, despite doubting the chance of being convinced of the project’s potential for Brazil. In total, the group has 130 deputies.

“He will have the opportunity to speak to us. If in his speech to us he convinces us that this bill has no connection with the possibility of people becoming addicted to gambling in order to make it a channel for family misfortune, that’s fine,” he told Folha de S.Paulo .

“It’s kind of difficult to convince us of this, but we will listen to the rapporteur. And obviously we should never say that the guy doesn’t have the ability to show that he’s not what we think”, he added.

Regulation of sports betting via Provisional Measure

The Federal Government has already published a provisional measure that addresses the regulation of sports betting. The PM was converted into bill 3626, which is under the rapporteurship of Adolfo Viana.

The matter has constitutional urgency and, since Saturday, the 9th, has been on the agenda of the Chamber of Deputies. The measure provides that companies in the sector will be taxed 18% on revenue obtained from games, after paying the prize to bettors.

According to the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, the taxation of bets should result in a revenue of R$2 billion for public coffers next year. This amount tends to increase in the coming years.
